Cell Cycle Group

Our group studies the molecular mechanisms and regulation of chromosome replication, by which eukaryotic cells preserve the integrity of their genomes from one generation of cells to the next.  We aim to understand the structure, function and regulation of the eukaryotic replisome, which mediates chromosome replication at DNA replication forks.  We combine a wide range of techniques involving biochemistry, genetics and cell biology, mostly using the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which represents an excellent model system with which to study processes that have been highly conserved during the evolution of eukaryotic species.

Karim Labib

Karim studied as a PhD student with Paul Nurse in the Department of Biochemistry at Oxford University. He then had a year as a postdoctoral fellow with Sergio Moreno at the University of Salamanca in Spain, two years with Stephen Kearsey in the Department of Zoology in Oxford, and five years with John Diffley at the Clare Hall laboratories in London. Karim joined the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in 2001 with a Senior Cancer Research Fellowship, and is currently a Senior Group Leader. Between 2005 and 2008 he was part of the EMBO Young Investigator Programme, and in 2010 was elected a full member of EMBO and also received the Hooke medal from the British Society of Cell Biology.
