Crispin Miller

I studied Artificial Intelligence as an undergraduate before completing a PhD in Computational Biology, which focused on the development of fast pattern matching tools for nucleotide and protein sequence analysis. This was followed by an MRC training fellowship in Bioinformatics. I joined the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in 2002, and currently head the Applied Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Group.

Applied Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Group

Applications are now open for our PhD programme starting in September 2010. Welcome to the Paterson Institute Applied Computational Biology and Bioinformatics group. We collaborate with clinicians and basic scientists on the analysis of bioinformatics data, and develop our own tools, databases and algorithms to support these analyses.

Much of our work involves dealing with Affymetrix microarray data, and we have developed a number of BioConductor packages for data analysis, including exonmap, designed specifically for exon arrays. X:Map is a Web 2.0/AJAX based genome browser built using the Google Maps API, and ADAPT is a database that shows the location of probesets for the previous generation of Affymetrix arrays.

Other projects within the group are focusing on proteomics data and on bringing these datasets alongside mRNA expression data, and we are also developing novel statistical approaches for dealing with large quantities of biological information.
